100 Families Highland Hospital Project

Multigenerational families who live in the Highland Hospital neighborhood and families with children who attend local schools worked together exploring subjects related to the health and well-being of individuals, the hospital neighborhood, the environment, and community building. The families worked with local, community-engaged teaching artists, Joaquin Newman and Eduardo Pineda, during art workshops at Highland Hospital from September to November, 2010. Families had the opportunity to complete artworks together and share meals with other participating families, further enhancing the community-building nature of the project.

Reproductions of the families’ artworks along with photographs of the participating families were incorporated into a large mural designed by artists Newman and Pineda. The mural is currently on display on the construction fencing around the perimeter of the Highland Hospital on East 31st Street and Vallecito Place. The hospital is located at 1411 East 31st Street in Oakland.

The program culminates with the unveiling of the mural and celebration with families, neighbors, and program partners in May or June 2011. Additionally, artwork and images will be featured in a traveling exhibition that will be presented at County facilities. Please stay tuned for more details.
